LED Laundry Room Lighting

Getting the most out of your laundry room starts with the right lighting fixtures. Without the right lighting in your laundry room, you might as well be doing your laundry in the closet. Conventional lighting can be too hot for an already warm space. Florescent bulbs tend to make a room feel like your cleaning clothes at the DMV. Use this guide to lighting with LED bulbs and you can be sure your mud room will be well lit for an affordable price.

LED Track Lighting

For laundry spaces that need a bright light source, LED track fixtures can be the source that you need to light your washer, dryer and folding area with one simple switch. LED's are easy to install over existing fixtures. Attach these fantastic laundry lights to a dimmer switch and you can keep the lights low for when you leave the room and turn them on bright when you need to fold the clothes.

Under cabinet Lighting

Many mud rooms have cabinets above the washer, dryer, lavatory or laundry folding area. These are excellent areas for installing under cabinet lights. LED under cabinet systems are easy to install and work well with most hanging cabinet styles. When installing under cabinet LED's, it's a good idea to space them apart about two feet for optimal light displacement. Rope lights are also another style of under cabinet lighting that works great in laundry room areas and can provide your laundry space with a continuous ambient light source under the cabinets.

Recessed Lights

A recessed fixture is commonly employed over the top of each laundry appliance and counter space facing directly down onto the surface. These flush ceiling LED fixtures are fantastic ways to keep your laundry room well lit without the need for exposed fixtures. Recessed lighting comes in various styles but LED recessed lighting works particularly better than a conventional can light in many ways. LED recessed lights are much smaller, yet yield more lumens per watt. Since they produce little heat, they can be installed in areas where conventional recessed lighting cannot. They also use significantly less energy making them a great addition to any mud room.

Light/Fan Combo

An LED fan combination kit is one of the best lighting systems for a laundry room. With a built in LED fixture and a ventilation kit to exhaust hot air, you can be sure your laundry room is well lit and ventilated, without being an expensive burden on the finances.

LED Insights: Consumer Education Is the Key

Let's face it. Many consumers purchase light bulbs based on their Watts rating, thinking that this number stands for the amount of light delivered and do not really understand that Watts means the amount of power consumed. Before the days of CFL's, however, the amount of Watts was a fairly good indicator of light performance, as a 75W incandescent A lamp did put out proportionally more light than a 60W, etc. Following the introduction of CFLs, it was initially difficult for many consumers to translate what it meant to buy a 13W, or other fluorescent version, in terms of equivalent light performance, and consumers were not sure if they would still get the same amount and quality of light vs. the familiar incandescent bulbs. A similar challenge now applies to LED, except to a greater degree, as the terminology has been expanded. For the consumer, determining which product is the right one for their application now demands knowledge of not only the energy savings in terms of power consumed, but also lumen output, color temperature, and even CRI. Fortunately and over many years, the industry did finally manage to educate the consumer on how CFLs compare to the common incandescent bulbs and most of the population now understands it, at least in terms of Watts, but there is a host of new words to learn in order to pick the right product off the shelf in this world of LED lighting.

Never before has it become so important to educate the consumer on the basics of lighting. The average homeowner has not been exposed to terms like lumens, color temperature, efficacy, and color accuracy or CRI. The Lighting Facts label is extremely helpful in validating the manufacturers' claims on LED products, but isn't the consumer still confused about what it all means? The Home Depot and Lowe's, as two of the top retail leaders in light bulb sales, have already taken some steps to communicate more effectively at point of sale. Of course, a major focus of this effort is to impart an understanding of lumens and color temperature. Lumens are actually the true measurement of the light out of a bulb or fixture, and color temperature represents the warmth or coolness level of the light. But I am personally wondering if the explanations for these terms should also be standardized. Maybe along with their respective labeling, the Department of Energy or the FTC should require specific wording or graphics on how these terms are defined to the consumer at the retail location? Is there really any sense to making this a point of differentiation and competition among the sellers of bulbs? Shouldn't the broader industry objective be to build a clear understanding of these terms across the consumer market?

LED lighting offers an opportunity to dramatically reduce energy consumption in this country, and the world. The sooner that the average consumer understands what these terms mean and how to select the right product to replace their incandescent or fluorescent bulb, the faster we will be able to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity to save our natural resources.

Why LED Globes Are Preferable For Energy Saving Lighting

With awareness of our impact on the environment and lowering our carbon footprints on the rise, the market has been inundated with products that are said to be more sustainable than others. One of the areas that these products have been so prevalent in is energy saving lighting and, according to reports, one of the best products to arrive for this area are LED globes. What makes these sorts of globes preferable to other types, however, and are these reports founded?

What are LEDs? Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have actually been around since the 1960's and are now available in very small units. Over time, these globes have developed a reputation for being highly reliable and for being able to withstand many of the knocks and bumps associated with daily life.

How much do they cost? Even though LED globes are vastly more expensive than other types (such as incandescent, halogen and CFL globes), they are slowly dropping in price and will continue to do so. You should also take into account the fact that LED globes last for around 30,000 hours, which is 20-30 times longer than other globes in many cases. Even with their slightly more expensive price, LEDs will save you money in replacement costs.

Energy saving lighting? To prove that LEDs really do have environmental benefits, let's compare them to some of the other globes on the market. Take a 25 watt halogen globe, for example, which will produce the same level of lighting that a 3 watt LED globe will. You can actually lower the amount of energy used to power one socket by around 80%. Not only does this help to lower your electricity bill, it will also reduce the loading on your wiring, resulting in less blackouts. So, what are some of the environmental benefits?

They have a much longer lifespan than other globes, reducing the amount that end up in landfill. They only consume low amounts of electricity, lessening the amount of carbon dioxide that is being produced. They do not contain mercury and other substances that are harmful to the environment.

When it comes to energy saving lighting, you really cannot do any better than the use of LED globes. As you can see from the above explanation, LEDs are able to lessen your impact on the environment in a number of ways and, even though they may cost a little more, the savings that you make in replacements and electricity will more than make up for it.

Benefits of the Trend Towards Online Shopping

The normal scene of walking into a store and looking through their inventory in order to purchase a product or products that you need is getting more and more outdated. There are many reasons why this is going away, and all of the reasons center around the Internet.

The first reason people are moving from shopping in physical locations to shopping online is comfort. With the introduction of the Internet, people now have the ability to shop from the comfort of their own home. They can even stay in their pajamas if they want! The convenience and comfort of shopping while sitting on your couch, is much more appealing than getting all ready and driving to a store that may or may not have what you are looking for.

And that brings me to my next point, selection. Physical store locations often have aisles and aisles of products for customers to choose from, but that does not always mean they have what you are looking for. When you drive to a store, you are going in the hopes that the product you need will be in stock, but unless you call ahead, you have no way of knowing whether or not it will be there. When shopping using online stores, you never have to waste your time by risking a drive to a store just to find out your product is not there. Online stores have a ton more products for you to choose from.

And one of the most important points driving people to purchase on the Internet is price. Online stores do not have to accrue the costs of sales associates, rent on a physical location, or bills for that physical location. So without these overhead costs, online stores have the ability to charge lower prices; prices that stores with physical locations just cannot afford to match.

This transformation from shopping at physical locations to shopping online can be seen in almost any industry; the lighting industry is following this new societal norm. Now consumers, both residential and commercial, are searching for their products on the Internet. Home grown, local lighting stores are suffering because they cannot compete with the convenience, selection, and prices of online stores.

The most important point in all of this, though, is that consumers are getting better deals. People are shopping more conveniently, are offered a better selection, and are getting better prices.

The Many Benefits of LED Lighting

We all know that LED lights offer many benefits for the user, but a lot of people are unaware of exactly how beneficial LED lights can be - not just for the home but also for your wallet. Purchasing LED lights takes a bit of research, especially in terms of buying the appropriate bulbs for your needs, but most people who buy LED lights choose them over regular incandescent bulbs.

Benefits While it is true that the bulbs themselves can be expensive, consider this: the average LED bulb is able to run up to 22 years without needing to be replaced. If you run the bulb continuously, it will last approximately 11 years. Think of how many incandescent bulbs you would have to buy within a 22 year period to match the solo LED bulb. The cost of the LED bulb pays for itself within the first year, when you consider the cost of electricity that you are saving as well.

Most LED lights will reduce your electricity bill since they tend to light up the room more than they heat it - a waste of electricity, so to speak - thus giving them an 80% efficiency rate. This simply means that 20% of the power goes into heating the bulb, while the other 80% simply provides lighting for the room. Compare this to incandescent bulbs which are not nearly as energy efficient as LED bulbs. Incandescent bulbs regularly waste 90% of their energy in the form of heat. Replacing your regular light bulbs with these lights will keep your room cool and pose less of a fire hazard as the bulbs tend to remain on the cool side.

The energy savings itself is why most people install various types of LED lighting in their homes - making these lights a common fixture in many homes. These come in many different shapes and sizes. You can purchase an LED lamp, or you can switch your lighting elements over to LED with the simple purchase of bulbs. The lights come in many different colors too, all of which offer the same cost-effective savings.

Since there are many bulbs on the market, you will want to do adequate research. Some bulbs are not made with the longevity of others, while some are just poorly made altogether. The best way to determine the right type of LED Lights for you is to read reviews and ask an expert for help, if necessary.
